The Land of the spirit Bear is in large part encompassed by the traditional territory of the Kitasoo/Xaixais First Nations, who have watched over the spirit bear for centuries and whose stories tell of the bear’s creation.

In the summer of 2000, the Kitasooo released their land-use plan for their their traditions that led to the first of several land-use agreements for the entire coast of BC and helped save large swaths of their territory from development.
